How to Perform Hajj (Step by Step – Tamattu’ Method)
Tamattu’ is the most common method for international pilgrims.
Preparation (Before 8th Dhul-Hijjah)
- Ihram:
- Assume Ihram from your Miqat (designated station) with intention for Umrah.
- Men wear 2 white unstitched cloths; women wear normal modest clothing.
- Say “Labbaik Allahumma Umrah”.
- Refrain from forbidden actions (cutting hair/nails, perfume, intimacy, etc.).
- Umrah (Before Hajj)
- Tawaf: 7 rounds around the Kaaba.
- Sa’i: Walk 7 times between Safa and Marwah.
- Halq or Taqsir: Men shave or shorten hair; women shorten a fingertip-length.
- Remove Ihram; wait until 8th Dhul-Hijjah to begin Hajj.
🕋 Hajj Rituals (8th – 13th Dhul-Hijjah)
8th Dhul-Hijjah – Day of Tarwiyah
- Re-enter Ihram with intention: “Labbaik Allahumma Hajjan”
- Go to Mina, stay overnight, pray 5 prayers there.
9th Dhul-Hijjah – Day of Arafah
- Go to Arafah before Dhuhr.
- Stay in Wuquf (standing in Arafah) from Dhuhr until Maghrib.
- Pray combined Dhuhr + Asr at Arafah.
- Make du’a – this is the most important day of Hajj.
After Maghrib – Go to Muzdalifah
- Stay overnight in Muzdalifah.
- Pray Maghrib + Isha combined.
- Collect 49 or 70 pebbles (7 for each of the next 3 days).
10th Dhul-Hijjah – Eid Day
- Return to Mina.
- Ramy al-Jamarah (stoning): Throw 7 pebbles at Jamarah al-Aqabah.
- Qurbani (sacrifice an animal).
- Halq or Taqsir again.
- Exit Ihram (can wear normal clothes).
- Go to Makkah for Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa’i (if not done after Tawaf).
11th to 13th Dhul-Hijjah
- Stay in Mina.
- Each day: Ramy (stoning 3 Jamarat: small, middle, big).
- You may leave on 12th after stoning if you wish (optional 13th).
Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada’)
- Before leaving Makkah, perform a final Tawaf.
